Personalized Tutoring

Reading is the fundamental building block on which all academic success is based. If your child is struggling with reading, specialized intervention is the key to future academic success and development. Winnie will assess your child’s reading skills and discuss assessment results with you. She will design an individualized lesson plan, integrating core reading strategies to ensure your child develops grade-level reading proficiencies. A Structured Literacy approach will be used to address the pillars of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing. Winnie is certified in both the Phono-Graphix and Orton-Gillingham approaches.

Tutoring sessions are conducted virtually, and a minimum of two sessions per week is highly recommended. If you are interested in tutoring sessions for reading, please schedule a free 15-minute phone consultation, and Winnie will gladly assist in answering any questions you may have.

Strategy Session

The goal of the Strategy Session is to develop a course of action for your child’s educational plan. If you have received a school-based or private psychoeducational evaluation of reading, but seek a deeper dive into the results, Winnie’s Place is here to support you. After receiving your child’s evaluation report, Winnie will review the paperwork prior to a one-hour Strategy Session call. During the Strategy Session, she will share an assessment of the report, ask more detailed questions, and provide recommendations for next steps to successfully engage with your child’s school, if needed.

Please schedule a free 15-minute consultation with Winnie to determine if a Strategy Session is a fit for you.

Reading Assessment

Reading assessments are most beneficial when they are designed to target areas of strengths and weaknesses, plan appropriate instruction, and monitor reading progress. Winnie’s Place offers a diagnostic assessment that measures the following critical areas of foundational reading:

Phonemic Awareness: Phonemic assessment tasks measure a child’s ability to blend, delete, substitute, manipulate, and reverse individual sounds in words.  Phonemic awareness is a robust early predictor of later reading ability in young children and is often an area of weakness in older striving readers.

Phonics (Letter-Sound Correspondence): Measures of phonics assess how well a child reads aloud lists of real and nonsense words.  A child’s ability to correctly connect sounds with corresponding letter spellings to decode words is a strong indicator of reading ability.

Oral Reading Fluency:  Measures of oral reading fluency assess the rate at which a child reads sentences or passages under timed conditions.  There is a strong correlation between oral reading fluency and reading comprehension performances.

Spelling: Measures of spelling assess a child’s ability to write orally dictated words correctly.  Analysis of spelling errors provides valuable information about a child’s phonological awareness and letter-sound correspondence skills.

Your child will receive a 45-60 minute assessment via Zoom. A follow-up call will be scheduled to discuss your child’s assessment results.

Disclaimer:  This is a diagnostic assessment to determine specific reading skills.  Results do not lead to a psychological diagnosis nor are they a substitute for a formal psychoeducational evaluation. Please schedule a free 15-minute consultation with Winnie for more information about the reading assessment and how it may be of use to you.
